Blog discussion #4: Global warming

This is a FEEDBACK discussion and will count towards your PARTICIPATION mark. It will also help you prepare for your ASSESSED CLASS DISCUSSION at the end of the semester.

Our next classroom topic is Global warming. We will be watching two films which present different viewpoints on manmade global warming. There will be a lot of new vocabulary and critical discussion questions. We will hold practice discussions with feedback in Week 12; in Week 13 we will hold small group discussions in my office and you will be graded (10% of final mark).

I would like students to take charge of this discussion: ask questions, post links to interesting articles and web sites about global warming, share new vocabulary and so on.

This discussion is open until the end of the semester.

Happy discussing!

One of the issues which we talk is globalization in recent years. There are several variety of globalization. One of this is global warning.
Amount of some gases are increasing; hence, warmth in earth's surface increase. It threatens all of the world and itcauses climate change. For example, warmths are increasing in winter, glaciers begin to melt; as a rusult of this, animal and plant species are either dicreasing or disappearance; neverthless, to what extent do people notice this threat?
We should be more sensitive about this issue and we should try to minimise global warning so should tap new sources of energy, should take caution against greenhouse; also, we should plant a tree.

Carbon Dioxide: a greenhouse gas emitted through the burning of fossil fuels by humans.

Greenhouse Effect: when infrared radiation is trapped in the Earth's atmosphere due to a layer of greenhouse gases. This in turn causes the global temperature to increase.

There is alist in this link including many words about environment and so global warming problem of the world:

Global warming is the most dangerous thing in the world. It obliteratesthe world and all people should do something. However, I think it is hard.Because almost everything that people use causes global warming.Forexample, cars, deodorants etc. There are some suggestionsfor people.Theyare easy things to start to do something.People should turn off electrical things when it is not necessary. They should decrease using hot water and they should plant trees. These are some advices. We should start somewhere to live for a lng time in the world even if it is difficult.

Doruk, an individual can use products, which are more natural, less harmful, but governments are also under liability. They should give countdown to people who want to decrease the detrimental effects that cause global warming, for example, by lowering taxes of useful goods for environment. For instance, Honda Civic Hybrid has less negative impacts by using electric motor than other cars which basic petrol is used to operate. These kinds of cars spread carbon dioxide as low as possible. Unfortunately, only 150 Civic Hybrids have been sold since 2006. Guess, why? The price and taxes of these cars...Although, the model Civics which operates with basic petrol are paid 35 billion 200 million to buy, Civic Hybrid’s price is 49 billion 920 million (Uludağ 136). Besides, there are no tax advantages for these kinds of products in Turkey. Therefore, individuals aren't only responsible by using less harmful products, but developments are also responsible for environment by lowering these products' taxes.

"Research shows that moving vehicles have the highest impact on greenhouse emissions. The 450 million vehicles on the road today account for half of the world's total consumption, generate nearly one fifth of greenhouse gas emissions, and have pervasive effects on land use and air quality. Personal transportation (i.e., home use) is responsible for 30 to 50% of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, 33% of toxic water pollution, and over 45% of toxic air emissions."

In recent years; global warming is the most important problem all around the world . We should take measures immediately in order to stop global warming. Global Warming is a dramatically urgent and serious problem.

I think We don't need to wait for governments to find a solution for this problem. In my opinion each individual can bring an important help adopting a more responsible lifestyle: starting from little, everyday things. It's the only reasonable way to save our planet, before it is too late
For example ; We should clean or replace filters on our furnace and air conditioner , switch to green power, buy locally grown and produced foods , eat less meat because Methane is the second most significant greenhouse gas and cows are one of the greatest methane emitters, Drive carefully and do not waste fuel ...(we can find Top 50 Things To Do To Stop Global Warming on this web site http://globalwarming-facts.info/50-tips.html )

Global warming, but it is causing a set of changes to the Earth's climate, or long-term weather patterns, that varies from place to place. As the Earth spins each day, the new heat swirls with it, picking up moisture over the oceans, rising here, settling there. It's changing the rhythms of climate that all living things have come to rely upon.

What will we do to slow this warming? How will we cope with the changes we've already set into motion?

http://science.nationalgeographic.com/science/environment/global-warming/gw-overview.html

it is very usefull site to learn about more the global warning.I have find the vocabulary, ı think they we have to know these words for understnad the exactly of tle global warning.

Greenhouse effect: when certain gases in Earth's atmosphere trap heat. These gases let in light but keep heat from escaping, like the glass walls of a greenhouse.

carbon dioxide :the major greenhouse gase

ice sheets :such as Greenland and Antarctica

Climate: Conditions of temperature, rainfall, humidity, etc. in a region. Of little ethical concern until in recent years when it has been realised that climate can be affected by human actions, as, for example, in GLOBAL WARMING

One of the most important problems as my friends mentioned. There are some researchers and intellectuals who emphasize the importance of changing the ecological system, just because global warming.Someone who works to protect the environment from destruction or pollution believe that world is in the serious danger. This danger effect negatively on the national security. It is far more than it,it should be international security.Environmentalists are right actually because states have been fighting for thousands of years and nuclear weapons have demolished everything and by the industrial revolution and factories have given out gases to the atmosphere which create appropriate conditions for greenhouse effect. If this process will be continued, companies will have no place to produce, situation go worse

What do you think about the Kyoto Protocol? Should Turkey ratify the protocol?

**The Kyoto protocol is a protocol to the international Framework Convention on Climate Change with the objective of reducing Greenhouse gases that cause climate change. It was agreed on 11 December 1997 at the 3rd Conference of the Parties to the treaty when they met in Kyoto, and entered into force on 16 February 2005. As of November 2007, 175 parties have ratified the protocol. Of these, 36 developed countries (plus the EU as a party in its own right) are required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the levels specified for each of them in the treaty (representing over 61.6% of emissions from Annex I countries), with three more countries intending to participate. One hundred and thirty-seven developing countries have ratified the protocol, including Brazil, China and India, but have no obligation beyond monitoring and reporting emissions. Among various experts, scientists and critics there is some debate about the usefulness of the protocol, and there have been cost-benefit studies performed on its usefulness.

Global warming has increased incredibly in recent years. The reasons of global warming are the population increase, increase in consumption, lack of forest also the air pollution, in short the main reason of the global warming is people. Because of the increase in consumption and capitalizm, the production is increasing in the world and the increase in production damages the nature.
Because of the global warming, the glaciers are melting, season are changing and the different type of animals are decreasing. As a result, equilibrium of nature is going downhill.
People should use the energy resources economical also people should use the water economical, too, also people should be careful about population. In short, the world is our, we must protect it.

Capitalism enables global and domestic trade by abridging the borders between the diverse cultures, countries and religions. Hence, capitalism has a beneficial feature which strengthens the dynamics of the market where the voluntary exchange of services and goods can be enhanced but also has a deleterious feature that causes negative impacts on the earth such as greenhouse effects. Hence, the nations convene for the greenhouse effect of industrialization with the Kyoto Protocol. This protocol aims to strengthen the international response to climate change by planning reduction in the collective emissions of six key greenhouse gases. However, Turkey resists signing by suggesting some economic problems that would occur after the obligations of this protocol. Turkey should ratify this protocol in order to support the international movement to hamper global warming, because if Kyoto Protocol is not confirmed by all governments, there will be no earth and no resources on the earth, in order to be able to produce services and goods and provide industrialization.

What do you think about this protocol? Is Turkey right not to sign this protocol? Do you Know any sensible reasons of why Turkey resists ratifing this protocol?

Merveeraydin said...

I found information on the Kyoto Protocol and global warming.

The most deleterious impact of industrialization is certainly the greenhouse effect, which consists of hazardous gases in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. Yet, it is obvious that the greenhouse gas emission levels continue to rise around the world with rapid and continuous manufacturing. Therefore, it becomes evident that only a collective and binding consensus by developed countries can convince businesses, communities and individuals to act on climate change and reduce the emission levels of greenhouse gases. The major action that is experienced by developed countries is the adoption of the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1992 in order to impede global warming. After that, the members of UNFCCC began negotiations on a extended Protocol-an international agreement. On 11 December 1997, the Kyoto Protocol was embraced by the members of UNFCCC in Japan . The main difference between the Protocol and the Convention is, while the Convention encourages developed countries to stabilize greenhouse gases emissions, the Protocol commits them to practice the regulations of the protocol.

Mostly this protocol aims to focus on developed countries more and place a heavier burden on them, because they can easily pay the cost of cutting emissions and they are more responsible for contributing to the greenhouse effect. However, it would be very costly to apply suitable technology in order to diminish the emission of gasses or it would cause apparent decline in manufacturing. Thus, even though most of the world’s countries agree to the Protocol, some nations such as Turkey choose not to ratify it. The major reason for Turkey’s persistence of not signing the Protocol is that it would become costly to apply highly technological equipment for manufacturing in order to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases as Turkey is considered a developing country.

Some gas has been sent to atmosphere by the people. The gas has given existence to conservatory effect on earth surface. Because of this, in the world, increasing average temperature is defined as global warming. People do not care global warming process; so, people, who live in the world, have caused the situation because of their self. We should cease from accusing each other or something and do useful things for earth surface, anymore. Hence, I agree with Doruk. As he emphasized that “what are the things that an individual can do to slow down the global warming?” It is so important to be reformed something on this way. What should we do as people who cause this situation? Firstly, we should become conscious on global warming. As Elvan mentioned that lots of things can be done as an individual; such as, using perfume. To use perfume is one of the negative impacts on ozone layer. To be honest, my friends, my close relatives and I always use perfume; although, we know these facts. It is only egoism. On the other hand, corporations participate on markets to have profit-making much more and they are influential on global warming. They have number one responsibility around their surroundings. As Tom Kay said that, “Profit-making is the nature of corporations.”(Roger&Me) But the most important is that environmental responsibilities are more important than profits. The productions, which are produced by corporations, have got damage on earth surface. As a result, with this problem should be struggled.

Kyoto protocol is a project. The project’s aim is to reduce oscillation of hothouse gas; hence, Kyoto protocol applied quotation above some countries. Because of this, carbon emission has to be reduced. But to reduce carbon emission’s cost have been increasing, anymore. So, the protocol has an alternative opinion. It is that to be supported “green projects” in developing countries as “green projects” are cheaper on this way or purpose. For instance, British Airways is supporting “hydroelectric central projects” in Brazil and Chine because of their customers sells carbon credits. On the other hand, Atlas-Blue is financing afforestation works as a result their passengers’ supplements. All of them are good works in order to reduce to send carbon to atmosphere.

Global warming has been the vital problem of our times although some governments ignore this issue. It means the earth can not reflect sunbeams back the atmosphere because the earth is covered by carbon dioxide and other gases like a thick layer and this layer traps sun’s heat in the atmosphere, in this way the planet is warming up constantly. Moreover, according to UN researches, as the possibility more than 90 per cent, the liable of this situation is human activities, like the using of fossil fuel, destruction of forest regions, increased consumption activities of people. However, in spite of all warning sign, some people do not believe that global warming is the fact, but; it is a fact. Experts say average global temperature has increased in serious proportion since 1860s and this situation is going to continue if necessary precautions are not taken. In that point, Kyoto Agreement has been the first step to stop global warming. Its purpose is rebalancing the amount of greenhouse gases emission in harmless levels. However, the U.S and some developing countries like China did not accept the Kyoto because this agreement strikes upon their industrial activities. Especially, the U.S government that is supported by petrol companies cannot dare to sign the Kyoto and also, other developing countries say they did not contribute to increase the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Unfortunately, all of these cannot help to stop global warming. Unless the countries give importance human life and the future of the world more than protecting their power in the world, we will face the result of global warming or we can struggle with it by increasing awareness about global warming like Al Gore.

Take a shower instead of bath.
Use less hot water.
Recycle your organic waste.
Eat less meat.
Eat fresh food instead of frozen food.
We should use public transportations instead of cars.
Right along with individual effort, all countries should show sensibility. In recent years Kyoto is the most effective and well-known protocol for global warming.

15 Very Important Things to Do about Global Warming...from the individual to the national

1. Learn about it -- start with this Web site and see the References.

2. Sell the SUV and choose cleaner, more efficient vehicles. Reduce your driving: one gallon of gas burned creates 20 pounds of CO2. Fuel up on ethanol and biodiesel.

3. Use efficient appliances, replace light bulbs with low-voltage compact fluorescents, check your home insulation. Buy renewable energy, like wind and solar, from your power company.

5. Companies -- the one you work for and the ones you buy from -- can save lots of money and reduce global warming by taking similar steps toward energy efficiency.

6. Shop smart: Look for products made from recycled materials, created with renewable energy, and which help you save money and reduce pollution.

7. Use your vote and influence as a citizen to elect responsive leaders; help them organize the neighborhood and town for energy efficiency.

8. Suburban sprawl makes for lots of global warming pollution; plan for walkable communities, lots of trees, open spaces, and public transportation in and between cities.

10. Build new homes and buildings for efficiency and solar power.

11. Support sustainable farming and forestry, including new crops to make into ethanol and other biofuels.

12. Let the corporations who make our cars, fuels, goods and power know you want their products to be as ecological as possible.

13. At all government levels, develop an efficient energy policy, moving away from fossil fuels.

14. Export new energy technology that uses renewable energy sources to the rest of the world.

15. ....and start doing these things today.

After asking a national sample of more than 1,000 Americans how much they knew about global warming and how they felt about it, the researchers report that respondents who are better-informed about global warming “both feel less personally responsible for global warming, and also show less concern for global warming.” Another unexpected result: “Respondents who showed a great deal of confidence that scientists understand global warming and climate change showed significantly less concern for the risks of global warming than did those who have lower trust in scientists.” Global warming is an extreme collective action dilemma, with the actions of one person having a negligible effect in the aggregate. Informed persons appear to realize this objective fact. Therefore, informed persons can be highly concerned and reasonably pessimistic about their ability to change climate outcomes.

For your question ezgi,we can do lots of thinks to reduce the damages the environment. For instance; some parts in Turkey, I accept that it is not possible but, but if all people get used to ride a bicycle for their transportation or if they get used to drawn on mwtro it will reduce to air pollution mstly because when all people begin to use cars it damages very much the environment. The other point, I want to mention about is using clean energy. If using wind energy and solar energy spans in Turkey, it will help the protection of environment. If we want to save the environment like merve's slogan, we have to not to use the deodorant.=) When I think this issue these are firstcomer to my head. - Use public transportation instead of using your personal car everyday.
- Consume less the natural resources such as waters, trees etc.
- Do not consume papers unnecessarily. You can use e-bills to prevent paper consumption.
- Use CFL instead of traditional bulb.
- Send used papers to recycling.
- Do not use air conditioner just to air your house.
- Don’t use packing.

My slogan: Don’t consume nature in order to save your life!

denizdalgic said...

Although it is absolutely necessary to consider climate change and environmental pollution as a moral issue and so in order to preclude the manmade environmental detriments, every simgle person should be responsible to protect the environment as much as possible, government and all other institutions which have political power also should allocate for the necessary actions for the protection of the environment. For instance, more facilities for purification/distillation of contaminant water should be built. The usage of natural gas, solar energy and geothermic energy should be prefered instead of coal energy. Furthermore,in case of transportation railway system should be commonly used instead of highway system. The waste products of factories should be inspected if they pollute the environment excessively or not. These examples can be proliferated. The main thing I want to attract attention is that besides individual preventions, fundamental infrastructure and regulations which are needed for the proteciton of the environment must be implemented.

merve çelik said...

My new slogan is:
"the climate crisis can be solved and we have everything we need. So, the solution is our hands."

As Al Gore said in his film that "We have to act together to solve this global crisis. Our ability to live is quite stake."(Inconvenient Truth)

merve çelik said...

I want ask new question to everybody.

In Al Gore view the scientific senses is that we are causing global warming. This is not real political issue. It is as much as moral issue as Deniz Dalgıç Mentioned that.

On the other hand, some scientists said that science is not explaining that global warming is manmade. And one of their evidence is that troposhere is not heating up because man-made greenhouse gasses are not causing the planet to heat up.

What do you think of these arguments?

Which is argument persuasive or convincing for you? Why or why not?

denizdalgic said...

Even though, Al Gore has convinced me with his great presentation and appropriate examples which really appeal to the sense and also mind of the audience, after watching "The Great Global Warming Swindle" I got really confused. The claims of the scientists in the second film, who are very qualified, bewildered me. The reason is that thus far we have been told that the cause of global warming was CO2 which is extremely arisen mostly by the industrial and technological tools. However, since the data, statistics and the speeches of the scientists were also convincing in the second film, I still cannot decide which argument is true. Although both films are convincing and show eligible evidences in their cases, if you check on the internet you will find opposite ideas and accusations that claim both films have misrepresented and misleading points. This is also another reason which makes me undecided about the issue of global warming.

busra said...

Nowadays, global warming is the big issue in the world, however government ignore this.

Global Warming is increasing average the temparature of the world.Increased the carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases cause on it, beside these human activity caused by global warming. The climate and season are changing, earth is warming up`; briefly ecosystem is changing and we can see the long-term effects coming in the melting of polar ice and glaciers. But a powerful trend in Atlantic hurricane data indicates we can already see the impact. Katrina was partly the result of a normal weather cycle, but that cannot explain away stronger hurricanes world wide.

We can't stop the global warming. Unfortunatelly, it is too late for that but we can find permanent solution.
Maybe permanent solution is agelong but when we find, we can take prevention:
We can slow it down and lessen its effects. CO2 does not last as long in the air as was once thought, so the big problem is slowing human use of fossil energy, especially coal.
We use nuclear energy because when it produces with quaility way, it does not pollute the water and air.

busra said...

We watched two films about the global warming. Merve mentioned that argument of two films.

Firstly, we watched Inconvenient Truth. This film shows us human activity cause the global warming
Then, we watched The Great Global Warming Swindle. Scientist refuse the human activity. They defend the environment caused the global warming. According to this film
sun around the world and increases in CO2 levels lagged behind temperature increases during glacial terminations. Relationship between atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and temperature change. Influence of carbon dioxide on climate change.

It is true but beside these, if people do not exist who produced the gas? The carbon dioxide gas produced when humans and animals breathe out and carbon dioxide emitted from cars, air planes, buildings.

Consequently, global warming with took shape environment and people.

Is the Global Warming hoax and crisis?

The global temperature did not rise above the anomaly line until 1979 and there has been no global warming (no temperature increases) since 1998 so the PDO explains "global warming" very well.

How is the Al Gore / IPCC crowd going to explain missing it? The bigger question is how are they going to keep their believers following the global warming theory when they're suffering through years of cold temperatures? The backtracking and strategic planning has already begun. Being able to blame the PDO is actually quite convenient for the global warming crowd, for the next 20-30 years they can blame any cooling or lack of warming on the PDO and continue to sell their CO2 theory. You'll hear statements like "it will return with a vengeance" and "we'll wish we would have done something". Fear tactics designed to make us continue believing their unproven theories. They would probably prefer to have constant warming but the writing is on the wall for cooling from several directions (e.g. weak solar activity). For the last 10 years there has been no global warming and global temperatures have begun to fall, even without the influence of the PDO, so having something temporary to blame for the cooling is very important for keeping the theory of man-made warming alive. It is going to be very interesting to see if people will continue to believe in "global warming" when they're living through decades of cold.
I read this, so I was confused.

Global warming is HOAX or REAL ?

What do you think about this ???

As Deniz and Merve mentioned, I’m very confused to decide which film and evidences are more persuasive to believe actually. In “The Great Global Warming Swindle”, scientists were really convincing because of their feasible evidences and qualifications. They defend that it is normal to warm up for the globe because the world have warming and cooling periods. The ice core record results prove that the temperature levels do not change according to CO2 levels. Also, those scientists claim that CO2 does not comprise enough the atmosphere to affect the climate. On the contrary the sun mostly impacts the globe because it has enough power.

In spite of all these reasonable scientific explanations, there are a lot of facts in the nature which show the climate change. At this point, I want to attract attention the justifiability of Al Gore because excess of consumption of people cause many damages in the nature. We destroy forests more than need, steam war chemicals to the air, pollute waters etc. All we’ve done to the nature have enough power to cause ecological degradation but I still have doubts about the relation global warming and this degradation.

Lastly, some evidences about global warming can be hoax, however the issue of global warming is real according to me.

Koray ERCİHAN said...

I think climate change cannot be ignored by saying it is hoax. If people don't have any impacts on climate change, it can be said that climate change is in the nature of the earth and climate change is not extraordinary. It is known that technology has improved and people started to consume more than need. This detoriates the earth in various aspects like natural disaster, wasting the nature resources. People are one of the reasons why our world become worse. Only one reason cannot explain global warming. People should consider their impacts on this issue and try to behave towards environment in this way. In addition, people should not avoid their responsibilities by ignoring this important issue. As Al Gore mentions that this is a noral issue than political one. I strongly believe that next generation should inherit a good place to live.

When I watched the two films, ı confused so ı decided to search this issue there are many articles which shows evidence to prove the global warming is a hoax. After reading this article ı decided that it is a hoax.

The Earth's surface has warmed a bit over the past century, but is that warming caused mainly by humans or by natural cycles? And can changes in human activity -- specifically reductions in carbon-dioxide emissions -- have anything more than a tiny effect on temperature? The answers to those questions, which are at the heart of the Kyoto Protocol and other attempts to force cuts in energy use, are simply unknown.

It is the claim of certainty that is a hoax. It's a dangerous one, too, since using global-warming theory as the basis for extreme policy mandates could plunge the world into a long-term recession or even a depression.

Exactly, Burcu G. I agree with you strongly. I think that global warming is a reality and crisis. But some evidence is hoax; such as, “the climate change levy, petrol duty, CO2 car tax, and workplace parking changes are justifiable environmental taxes. It is myth. On the other hand, as carbon dioxide emissions from cars and factories do not have any measurable impact on climate. It is fact.” (The Great Global Warming Swindle- some evidence by scientists)

But Al Gore’s theory is correct. Because, if global warming does not caused directly by manmade as well as, human being can cause to global warming as quickly. It is so important. Global warming can be slowly or quickly. Because of this, people’s behaviors are so effective for the change.

I hope so, my opinion will be answer for Büşra’s question. Büşra, what about you?

busra said...

It is a good question =))

Actually, I can not decide yet but probably I agree with Merve because if global warming does not exist, why climate and season are changing or why sea level rise or shortly why ecosystem is changing? because of global warming.

Namely I think global warming is not hoax !!

For global warming problem, what can we do ? instead of using less water, etc... Last week, i read a article about history of hibrid cars and also GM's investigations about it. Author who wrote tis article suggest a documentary film (WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR). Is there anyone who watched this documentary film before? If you watched, what is your opinion?

semih said...

Büşra and Merve i made some research about global warming. As we see in the second film "The great Global Warming Swindle". Scientists claim that carbon dioxide and temperature parallel to each other. However when temperature increases, carbon dioxide also increases because of the temperature. "The film asserts that carbon dioxide levels increase or decrease as a result of temperatures increasing or decreasing rather than temperatures following carbon dioxide levels, because as the global climate cools the Earth's oceans absorb carbon dioxide, and as the climate warms the oceans release carbon dioxide." I m confused too, but i think these things are related to each other. Problem can be sun raditions which is more effective than past. Global warming effects our earth that is, global warming effects us so maybe we can't stop it but we can take responsibilities about nature.

Yes, Semih. You are right. I read some articles two days ago about the crisis like you. And I learned somethings.

I think that scientists are saying truly on global warming process in Great Global Warming Swindle.

For example, "One of the most curious aspects of the global warming alarm is the persistent reluctance of some climate scientists to consider the role of the sun." ( http://greatglobalwarmingswindle.com/thesun.html)

Green house gases cause global warming.in other word earth level is heated by sunspot.Everyaday people release a lot of green house gases into the air so people action cause climate change and united nations climate report explained that global warming is made human activities.I think climate change is crisis.Global warming is affecting many parts of the world and sometimes people die because of climate change. For example global warming makes sea rise and when sea rises the water covers low and island. This is a big problem for plants, animals and people on island. We can give a lot of examples in all of the world like this so Global warming is crisis

elvan said...

First of all, Büşra thank you for your insistence to learn our opinion:)

Like some of my friends I confused too and I searched something about global cooling. In the website of American Conservative Union Foundation, there is written that global cooling is seen from 1988 to 2005. Carter who is an Australian paleoclimatolojist-a person who studies for climatic conditions, and their causes and effects in the geologic past- says “If we consider last 6 million years, the planet began that period with 3 million years in which the climate was several degrees warmer than today. Then came 3 million years in which the planet was basically cooling.” He also says “for more than 90 percent of the last 2 million years, the climate has been colder, and generally much colder, than today”.
Actually this commentary explains the graph of relatian between increasing C02 and decreasing temperature during the post war boom. That means, although people increase the amount of CO2, the planet may not be warming. Wow!! While I am writing my opinion is also changing:)
Global warming could be a hoax. However the negative impact of people on earth shouldn’t be ignored. Besides, if people change the nature of environment this is a crisis that has to be solved by people. Therefore, global warming could be a hoax if we think the earth’s long-term activities and global warming could be a crisis if we affect negatively the nature more than usual

elvan said...

Merve, you said, “scientists are saying truly on global warming process in Great Global Warming Swindle.” Okay, the sun could have more impact on earth but why did these scientists ignore effects of people? In the film, “People shouldn’t feel as a guilty from global warming” is said. Haven’t people damaged the planet, for example, by polluting? I think, these scientists don’t realize some impacts on earth or this film was made to protect Bush from polemics, which has occurred after Al Gore’s film. Why did second film try to disprove most evidence in Al Gore’s film? Therefore, in my opinion, scientists in the second film aren’t truly enough.

merve çelik said...

Dear Elwan,:)
I am trying to demonstrate that two opinions are on global warming. According to me, scientific evidence is so important; on the other hand, effects of human being,in the world, are surely influential. I accept this. No problem:)
Just I wanted to mean that in the second film shows more scientific evidence and examples.

I am not interested in personal relations between the scientists and Al Gore.

I am sleeping a little later and I think you, too:)

So thanks a lot for your arguments.

Good evening. mujjjcccccckksssss.

elvan said...

Thanks for your quick answer:)
What I want to explain is that there could be more evidence but these evidence are so one- sided. Second film could have more proof but it ignores completely human activities.

Actually, I don’t defend Al Gore completely because he is also one- sided. He didn’t represent the process of earth. Therefore, two films were used as a political issue but we have to pay attention to this issue more than a political one.

By the way, scientific evidence is important for me too:)

Thanks for your arguments too. Sleep well:)

Melih, if you wanna know what we can do agianst global warming,i would answer your question with theese energy saving ways; we can isolate our houses to spend less energy on warming, use the dishwasher only when its fully loaded, wash our clothes with warm water not boiling water -so you can save more then %50 of energy with that- , switch our old bulbs to flourescent bulbs to save more, turn of the lights when its not neccecary ( you already do that =] )
and for the transportation i would recommend using public transportation, regularly doing car maintenances, checking our tires ( 0,5 bars of less air in our tires improves saving rate by %5 ) , using fuel efficient, hybrid or automatic transmissioned cars, using trains rather then the planes on the distances of less then 500kms..

According to David smith, the Flint journal, “Thanksgiving turkey causes global warming.” This sounds me interesting. He claims that turkey is known an animal that can absorb CO2. Besides, “While cooking turkey, in every thanksgiving kitchen, almost a hundred million household, ovens are being preheated to 325 degrees. Because of these, traditional salad is offered in the Thanksgiving Day.

I can recommend the film "Who Killed the Electric Car?". It is a good example of the ways in which environmental issues have become politicized.

Sonja Tack said...

Many of you have mentioned ways individuals can slow down global warming (assuming it's manmade). So I want to ask you: have you been following your own advice? What have you done personally to reduce global warming since we started discussing this topic?

Sonja Tack said...

Well Elvan, what do you think of that turkey example? Doesn't it seem a little over the top (exaggerated)? To me, it's a prime example of some of the hysteria surrounding global warming...It seems people will do anything to avoid pointing the finger at corporations (the world's biggest polluters...)

elvan said...

Yes, as you said Sonja it is exaggerated but it is logical, too. Because of these, that example sounded interesting to me.

Merveeraydin said...

After I have watched both of the film, I started to worry about the climate change and the global warming seems more crisis than a hoax. I believe that everybody should take responsibility in order to reduce the effectsof the manmade global warming. In An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore underlines the implications of global warming with very interesting stong presentation which enables the strong interaction between the audiences and Al Gore. After the second film, The Great Global Swingle I am confused, because the second film evokes that the manmade is not the main cause of the global warming and this documentray illustrates that the global warming is a natural cyle and the main reason of the climate change is he solar activities (the reactions and movements of the sun itself). When comparing these two films, Al Gore is more intimate and accomplishes to communicate to the audiences with strong thesis and data and profond presentation. On the other hand in the second film there are scientists, economists, politicians, writers, and others who are sceptical of the scientific consensus on global warming. Hence, the second film is consisted of more scientific facts and data. Both of the films are necessary.

Merveeraydin said...

As an individual, I believe that we all should take care of our reduction of the global warming. According to first film that points out the manmade global warming as a cause, we can do something to reduce our own impact on environment. In our daily lifes, we can reduce the water and air polution by not throwing our garbages on the environment and not utilizing the materials that polute the air and water. The other thing that we can do in order to reduce the impact on the environment might pay attention on recyling. Thus, we can do our best to protect our environment. At this point, the most vital part of ourmovement might be to encourage other people in order to maket hem aware of this social issue. Other than individuals, the government and business organizations should take responsibiliy to reduce their impacts on earth. For example, governement should control the waste of the factories and regulate some obligationsfor manufacturing such as highly technological equipments for production in order to reduce the difusion of the deterious gasses in the atmosphere.

denizdalgic said...

I have always been trying to follow my own advice. Actually as a person who do not have a financial gain, my general consumption and harmful affect to environment is inconsiderable comparing to many other. However, I beware while using water and electricity and try not to consume them when it is unnecessary to use. Furthermore, I usually take into consideration the raw materials of the goods that I use. For example, today recycling is a beneficial way to diminish pollution and extravagant consumption. On the other hand, I sometimes participate meetings and conferences about global warming and the future of the globalized world in order to advance my knowledge and that is also help to gain sensitivity to the problems which actually interest every single person. For this reason, everybody should take global warming and global pollution serious and try to take responsibility in order to reduce our detrimental impact on earth.

Merveeraydin said...

I think that the global warming can not be hoax depending on our observations of the implications of global warming. For example, the first filmillustrates many points about these implications of global warming; the breaking up of polar ice shelves has resulted in changes in sealevel, which threaten coastal settlements, extreme downpours lead tomore droughts, as precipitation is relocated; Lake Chadin Africa isalmost dry, Mosquitos, avian flu havemoved nortward, as the oceans get warmer, stroms get stronger; the first ever hurricane in the South Pacific tookplace off the coast of Brazilin 2005. In the film, Al Gore says “what changes in US with hurricane Katrina was a feeling that we have entered a period of consequences.”

Merveeraydin said...

Actually, I believe that I am followingmy own advice.Sometimes I warn people not to waste water and polute the environment. I take care of using enough water and not wasting it while brushing my teeth and taking a shower. Moreover I try to pay attention on recyling.

For example; forest fires has too many affects global warming. I mean, the fires destroy the forests, at same time our oxigen sources. Also there are another events were effected by global warming. For example; hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis or ather natural disasters are anymore more destructive because of golb. warming.

Because almost whole countries try to solve the problem of glob. warming. But nowadays we are trying to entire EU and there are environment rules and one of them to sing the Kyoto protpcol. I have found an article from USA Turkish Times, which had published an interview with Osman Pepe in Zaman and Aksiyon, the minister for the environment and forestry. He claims that although Turkey has low impacts on global warming, Turkey tries to do something to protect global warming from our damage. Turkey cannot afford to sign Kyoto Protocol but it tries to reforest to prevent land erosion and he says, “We have established air monitoring units to raise the quality of air.” Besides, “the government has banned the use of old polluting cars and decided to provide incentives to producers of renewable energy for up to 10 years, in order to raise the share of renewable energy” is written in that news. According to these explanations, although Turkey doesn’t have budget to reduce our effects by signing Kyoto Protocol, it tries to do influent things

By using economic lambs we stop breeding 75 kilograms of CO2 and if we wash clothes at low degrees we stop breeding 250 kilograms of CO2. In addition, of course walking or using public transport rather than driving car is important too. If we recycle half of rubbish that we clean at our homes, we will stop breeding 1200 kilograms of CO2. Actually using siphon less is a perfect way to not to waste the water but I do not think that it is a clean way. I want to add that we can help people to notice about global warming and I know a great way to do it. By just clicking http://www.greenpeace.org/turkey/ we can do something individual. Especially to save water sources. One thing i know; that we cant effect the sun as individuals.neither earths rotation around it.

We watched two films that were very important by showing two-sides of global warming. Al Gore argued that global warming is caused by human; on the other hand, scientists said that global warming is caused by nature. Actually, i feel confused about these issues, but i think Al Gore’s film was more convincing. The most important point i did not understand is that Al Gore showed in his film some graphs and statistics telling relationship between CO2 and temperature, also in the second film it was defended that there is no relation between CO2 and temperature. Which one was true? Both of sides showed the statistics, which statistics were reliable?

(The Inconvenient Truth / The Great Global Warming Swindle)

Before watching these films, if i confess, i have used very much water, also hot water. Then i learned that as an individual we can do lots of things against the global warming, furthermore one of them is that we should use less hot water, because excessive energy is used to hot up water. So now i care about this one.

Today’s most important issue that threat people’s life and earth’s future is global warming. World is getting warmer it really affects our life. We see the implications of global warming. Increase in carbondioxide cause air pollution. Less rainy and snowy days cause lack of water especially in turkey most lakes are almost dryand last summer people are warned to use less water than before. These are the things that we suffer from mostly. The most important point is the cause of global warming. There are two ideas about this. One of them supoorts man made global warming theory. However the others think that solar activities is more influential rather than man made do. We watched two films in this month about global warming.First of them is An Unconvenient Truth. It is a film by Al Gore. He tells affects of global warming and supports the first sight. According to him people are the cause of global warming and People dont care about this issue moreover they continue to damage the world. Before watching the second film The Great Global Warming Swindle, i was totally agree with Al Gore but now i am confused. Because in the second film there were scientists who know very well this issue and everything about the global warming. In addition to this the graphs that we saw in the film was shocking to me. The data and graphs showed that the main cause of global warming is sunspots, in other words solar activities. It is more effective than people’s damage. I believe that both of them are acceptable and both the solar activities and man made do are the cause of global warming. If scientists are right, than we are lucky but if Al Gore is right than we have many things in order to reduce the affect of global warming.

We see the great affects of global warming that harm our world. It means the global warming is totally a crisis. We see the negative effects of climate change in our daily lifes and it forces us to believe man made global warming theory. The oceans and the seas get warmer storms get stronger and because of this many people died in different places of earth also animals died since the rain forests were damaged by people. As wee see in the first film carbondioxide have never risen above today’s level and it means that we have never breath this kind of polluted air before. If we continue to harm the world we will die because of polluted air and everbody could easily accept that it is the worst cause of dead.

This term we watched 2 films about global warming which are against to each other. First film (An Inconvenient Truth) was about manmade global warming and shows some evidences and statics about global warming with Al Gore’s presentation. It was incredible and effective with its shows. The other film (The Global Warming Swindle) was about global warming too, but with different perspectives. It shows that global warming was the results of the nature, not by the human. This film was also incredible with its displays but it was not enough good with its context. Thus I really did not like it; because the evidences of the natural global warming were ludicrous. For that reason the first film was so convincing than the second one. It changed my opinion and perspectives about global warming and I realized that I should do something against to it learn much about it.

Thus, we can use public transportations instead of our own car, companies can use filter, we can plant trees... We can use less electric and less water. We should turn lights off when we don't use the lights. We should be sensitive about recycle products. We shouldn't cut the plants i think it is also important.

We watched two films about global warming. One was Al Gore's movie who is a politican and the other one is The Global Warming Swindle. I totally agree with Al Gore's ideas. Global Warming must be the biggest issue right now. I think not too much attention is given to this issue. There are some corporation and some films like we watched but the most important thing is to get politicans attention right now. And i belive that they won't do anything until something will happen. That's what they always do. In Turkey, they said that they will be a huge eartquake in Istanbul but politicans did nothing about it. After years past and it did happen then they started to have precaution. So we should be more sensitive about the global warming problems like not using unhealty cars or recycle. If we do all these things and be careful about it then we wouldn't need politicans attenttion to fix this.
